Rental Tips

Here are a few things to consider when renting a Jeep on Lanai.

  • Lana’i is a small island with only about 32 miles of paved roads. In addition, there are several trails left over from the pineapple plantation days. We want to help you tour efficiently to take in the best views. Most independent vendors will pick you up and/or return you to your hotel, the ferry landing or the airport.

  • Lana’i is a very safe island, with little or no crime, and we also have an excellent modern police force that is a division of the Maui PD. Improved cell service is also now available from most of the island’s favorite tourist locations. If concerned, let your hotel or someone else know where you are going and what time you expect to return.

  • Be sure to stock up on water and food in Lana’i City before you head out in your Jeep or Subaru as there are no other markets to purchase these items on the island, and you are bound to get thirsty and hungry at the beach. Allow yourself time to return before dark as limited light creates difficult driving conditions.

  • The state of Hawaii charges a sales tax of 4.5% and a daily surcharge of $5.00. Make sure this is clarified with the vendor. Otherwise, you’ll be paying another $8.00+ per day if not included in their quoted daily rate.

  • Gasoline is prices are the lowest in all of Hawaii on Lana’i, and we can all thank Uncle Larry for his good graces on that cost saving resource.

  • Your vendor should be located on Lana’i. If your vendor is located on Maui, for example, how long will it take for them to get to Lanai should issues arise during your rental?

  • Credit Cards. It is normal to expect a vendor to take your credit card information just like all national car rental agencies. This is done in case you do not show up for your reservation or do not replace gasoline used. Normally they will charge you for one day. This is because if you fail to call to cancel your reservation 48 hours in advance, they lose the opportunity to rent to anyone else. Gasoline is the responsibility of the customer for which you must return the vehicle with a full tank as it was provided to you. The only other charge would be incidentals or damage to the vehicle. Your card should not be charged in advance. The exception is if you plan on renting the vehicle for longer than three days. Some vendors will then require a deposit, which may be negotiable. Most vendors are very conscientious and reliable about this.

  • Insurance. We DO NOT offer vehicle rental insurance. Make sure you have a valid form of insurance which covers rentals.

  • Qualifications: You must be 25 years or older, have a valid Driver’s License, a major Credit Card in your name, have full Insurance coverage which also covers rental vehicles.
